Freedom!

I’ve been feeling really good about my progress lately.  I’m hitting PR’s regularly at Crossfit.  I’m (generally) making better food choices.  I feel better.  I feel like I look better.  I’m happy about all of this.

Have I lost weight?

I have no idea!

This picture was taken over a month ago.

And I didn’t realize until this morning that this was quite possibly the last time I’ve stepped on my scale!  And I cannot tell you how free I feel because of this!

Last month, my trainer & his wife told me to stop focusing on the number on the scale and pay attention to how I felt and how my clothes were fitting me.

Are you kidding me?  I need to know the number.  The number is the sole source of my success or failure.

Wow.  That is some pretty messed up thinking.

Fast forward to today…

I have no idea if I’ve lost weight, but I can tell you that the pants I’m wearing today are too big.  I bought them in August and now they are baggy in the waist and hips.  This (while it sucks that the pants are so new) is an amazing feeling.

What I’m doing is working.  And it doesn’t matter what I weigh.  I feel great.  I am getting stronger every day.

Here are the top 3 reasons I’m happy to let my scale sit in the corner and collect dust…

1.  Because now I don’t wake up every morning, get on the scale and measure the success or failure of the previous day by the number staring back at me.  This is a much more positive way to start the day.

2.  By not focusing on how much I weigh, I worry less about food and how much I should be eating.  I have been (mostly, or at least much better than I have been in the past) making healthier choices.  When I was weighing myself all the time, I worried about what I ate and how it would affect the number on the scale.  By not focusing on this, I actually worry about food less and feel much less stressed out about what I can or can’t eat.  Not having this stress actually frees me up to make healthier choices, and I have noticed that the rate of my emotional/stress eating has decreased.

3.  I am now able to actually focus on my goal.  My goal is to rock the fittest body I have ever had.  I can see the difference that working out has made when I look in the mirror.  My shoulders and back look more defined.  My waist is smaller.  My arms are starting to get more toned.  When I was weighing myself every day (or nearly every day), that number on the scale was the sole determining factor of whether I was headed in the right direction of my goal.

Turns out my coach and his wife were right!  It’s better to dump the scale!

Stop looking down at the number on the scale and look ahead at yourself in the mirror!  It’s a much more positive way to go!

How would your life improve if you freed yourself from the scale?
